Soap is made from grease and it turns back into grease and builds up along the walls of the pipe.

Main sewers can clog for a variety of reasons. Most common is tree roots growing into the pipe.
How do tree roots get into the pipe?
Some older homes have clay tile sewer pipe that has a collar every 4 feet. With tree growth in the spring and fall, the roots find their way through those openings for water.
